Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited red blood cell disorder that affects the hemogloblin in the red blood cells and the capacity of the red blood cells to carry oxygen to vital organs, blood vessels and joints. The defect in the red blood cells causes enormous pain an life-threatening complications. There is no cure and the lack of viable treatment options makes this disease one of the United Nations' health priorities.
In 2005, the UNESCO, 2005, World Health Organization, 2006, and the United Nations (2008) recognized sickle cell disease as a public health priority. The 19 of June, has been chosen to celebrate every year the World Sickle Cell Day in order to raise awareness of the disease in the world.
June 19th is Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Day and September is International Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month
VACA has a personal connection to sickle cell disease, as the children we work with have this illness, as well as some of our dearest parents and friends from TAIBU Health Services parents and our own Executive Director. We are proud to offer speaking engagements and workshops on Sickle Cell Disease. We created a commercial about the disease. Check it out.
